Former India Skipper Dilip Vengsarkar Says MCA The Only Association To Organise 125 Official Tournaments

Former India captain and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Advisor Dilip Vengsarkar exhorted young and emerging Mumbai cricketers to make use of the opportunities coming their way as Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) was the only State association in the country that organised 125 official tournaments in a season.Vengsarkar was addressing a gathering of players, officials and administrators at the MCA's season-opening event at the Sharad Pawar Indoor Academy at Bandra-Kurla Complex."MCA is the only association that conducts 125 official tournaments. Nobody, no other association does that. So you get so many opportunities. Just grab those opportunities and do well. Make it a habit of scoring 150, 200, 250. Winning is a matter of habit and how to wriggle out of tight situations. That comes out of habit. I'm sure you will do extremely well this season," the India great told young Mumbai cricketers present at the event.Vengsarkar stressed upon the importance of mental toughness in the growth of young players."You have to train well in skill level and mental toughness. These four months are very important for all of you. I'm very glad MCA has started this program. These four months you have to work on your fitness. It is so very important nowadays."Reminiscing about his own career and the lessons and learnings from there, Vengsarkar felt self-belief is a key aspect in growth of a player."I just want to say that you have to believe in yourself because when I first played for Mumbai, I was 18. After scoring very heavily in Inter-Varsity championship, Inter-Collegiate Championship then I could do only scoring and I felt extremely bad at that time. I was the captain of Bombay Schools, Indian Schools etc and here I was so keen to do well for Mumbai." "But we had the superstars Ashok Mankad, Eknath Solkar, Sunil Gavaskar etc but I was so confident and that's very important. You have to think that you are the best and you can match anybody. At the age of 18 I had that confidence because I was doing well on the field. The entire year I was doing scoring," he added."Last year, our top order batting was not doing well" - Dilip VengsarkarThe former India skipper revealed that he got an opportunity only when Solkar was injured. Vengsarkar felt it was extremely important to grab opportunities with both hands and advised youngsters to do the same."When you get opportunity in life, grab it with both hands especially in big games. If you are playing the final or semifinal you must deliver.""Of course you can play well in other games too but these matches matter a lot. I scored a 100 in that match and in the next match I played for India. These are important things. You must win big games. Last year, our top order batting was not doing well and Tanush Kotian and Shardul Thakur were rescuing us for a big part of the season," he added, referring to Mumbai's Ranji performance last season. The former national chief selector stated that he looked for players who are eager to play for Mumbai."We need players who take pride in playing for Mumbai. When I was selector I used to look for players who would deliver. For me, match winners are important. Virat Kohli was one of those players who I picked for the Emerging Players tournament and he put his hands up to open the innings," he added."We have to take the guard again and start" - Omkar SalviMumbai head coach Omkar Salvi was optimistic for the new season ahead and stated its a new beginning for the team."I think its a new beginning. We have to take the guard again and start. Whatever we have achieved now is in the past. This team should be known as a talented team and a hard-working team.""There are so many areas where we can get better at and we will work towards that. I feel overall we can improve with few areas in batting. When asked about young batting sensation Ayush Mhatre, Salvi felt Mhatre was not the only one but there were lot of players who have got potential and who can achieve high laurels."
