Mumbai: As the sacred month of Sawan (Shravan) begins in July 2025, devotees look forward to the spiritually charged Mondays (Somwars) dedicated to Lord Shiva. However, this year brings a significant astrological twist: the first Sawan Somwar falls under the shadow of Panchak—a five-day period traditionally considered inauspicious in Hindu beliefs. In 2025, Panchak begins just five days after Sawan starts, aligning directly with the very first Monday of worship.
In Hindu dharma, timing is everything—important events, rituals, and new beginnings are only initiated during auspicious muhurtas (timings). Panchak refers to a specific five-day phase that occurs each month and is believed to bring unfavourable outcomes if not observed cautiously. During this period, several activities are avoided, especially marriage ceremonies, property dealings, travel in the south direction, and even making or buying beds.
Since Panchak starts on a Sunday, this period is known as Rog Panchak, which is astrologically linked to health issues, both mental and physical. It is advised not to travel towards the south direction, and not to construct or purchase a cot or bed during this time.
Yes. Despite Panchak being seen as inauspicious for starting new ventures or celebrations, Shiva worship is not restricted. Devotees can still perform Shiv Puja with full devotion and faith. In fact, as the scriptures suggest, Lord Shiva is known as the conqueror of time (Kaal ke bhi Kaal), and His worship is considered to neutralise even inauspicious influences.
So, even if the first Sawan Monday falls within Panchak, devotees can go ahead with Shivling abhishek, chanting mantras, offering bel patra, and lighting a diya to receive blessings.
