New Delhi: Polish star Iga Swiatek produced an excellent display to thrash Liudmila Samsonova in straight sets and reach her maiden Wimbledon semi-finals on Wednesday, July 09. Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek dispatched Samsonova 6-2, 7-5 in the quarters to book her spot in the semi-final in women’s singles at Wimbledon 2025.
The former world no.1 will take on the winner of the quarter-final between Mirra Andreeva and Belinda Bencic in the semi-final. Swiatek has endured a difficult year so far, but has managed to spark a turnaround at Wimbledon, where she has regained her mojo and has been looking unstoppable.
She has reached the semi-final of the tournament for the first time as the eighth seed continues her bid to win her maiden title at the All England Club. Swiatek has also become the first Polish woman since Agnieszka Radwanska in 2015 to reach the semi-final at Wimbledon.
Swiatek made light work of Clara Tauson in the Round of 16 on Monday to enter the quarter-final and continued her impressive run against Samsonova on Wednesday. The 24-year-old made a strong start in the quarter-final as she raced to a 6-2 victory in the first set to go 1-0 up.
In the second set, Swiatek made some silly errors and was also inconsistent with her serves, however, her experience and quality helped her reign supreme in the end. Despite Samsonova’s two double faults in the second set, Swiatek failed to capitalise initially, as it turned out to be a hard-fought battle in the end. Both players made mistakes on serves and exchanged breaks as Swiatek at one point failed to win the set by squandering three game points.
But she eventually won the set 7-5 to secure a spot in the semi-final and will be hoping to go the distance this time around. Swiatek is expected to face the world no.1 Aryna Sabalenka in what promises to be a mouth-watering summit clash if she manages to win the semi-final. Swiatek has reached the semi-finals of all three Grand Slams this year, but is yet to win a major in 2025.
Delighted after her victory, Swiatek soaked in the support from the crowd during her victory celebration and insisted she will continue to work hard on her grass game to make her Wimbledon dream turn into reality this year.
“It feels great. I got goosebumps after this win. I really worked hard to progress on this surface. This year I will just work with it and myself,” said the five-time champion after her victory.
Belinda Bencic beats Andreeva to reach semi-finalsBelinda Bencic defeated Mirra Andreeva in the 4th quarter-final to book her place in the semi-final at Wimbledon 2025. Switzerland’s Bencic defeated Andreeva 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-2) in a hard-fought clash to set up a semi-final meeting with Swiatek. Bencic held her nerves in crunch moments and looked calm throughout the contest to secure her victory in a second-set tie-break.
