Budget airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet may offer cheap fares, but their stringent hand luggage rules can quickly ramp up the cost. Travellers must adhere to strict weight and size limits if they wish to avoid paying for additional hand luggage or checked bags.
But a shoeexpert has shared a "simple yet effective shoe rule" that could help holidaymakers stay within the free luggage allowance. Planning your trip's itinerary in advance is crucial, as it allows you to be selective about what makes the cut for your suitcase and what gets left behind. Gabriel Miller from Gatsby Shoes highlights that footwear often takes up the most space and adds significant weight to your luggage.
Gabriel advises travellers to limit the number of shoes they pack. "Packing efficiently not only eases the stress of travel but also helps you navigate different situations with ease, safe in the knowledge that you have a shoe for every occasion," Gabriel explained.
He advocates for a minimalist approach: take no more than three pairs of shoes on any journey, which saves space and promotes mindful packing.
Gabriel assures that a well-chosen selection of shoes can cater to various activities, whether you're touring a city by day or attending a sophisticated dinner in the evening.
"It's about bringing what you need, not what you might use," the footwear specialist emphasised.
Gabriel categorises the essential footwear into three groups, recommending holidaymakers pack just one pair from each category to cover their entire trip.
The initial pair should be comfortable walking or trainers, which can double up for travel days. "Your primary pair of shoes should be comfortable for walking, durable enough for adventure activities, and stylish enough not to detract from your daily outfits," Gabriel explained.
"Opt for neutral colours that blend seamlessly with multiple outfits."
Next, consider a smarter pair for any upmarket dining or formal occasions during your break. "Even on vacation, a dressier shoe option is crucial for evenings out or more formal events," Gabriel noted.
Gabriel recommends versatile loafers for gentlemen or elegant heeled sandals for ladies that can enhance any ensemble.
For those heading to warmer climates or coastal destinations, a pair of sandals or suitable beach footwear is essential. Typically, these occupy minimal luggage space.
"Ideal for relaxing days by the water or casual strolls, a good pair of sandals is indispensable," Gabriel stated. "Choose options that are easy to clean, quick to dry, and comfortable enough for prolonged wear."
