Delhi on Yellow Alert: What it means and things to be careful of while travelling

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Yellow Alert for Delhi-NCR today, due to heavy rain in Delhi and nearby areas, which caused flooded streets and heavy traffic. Even though a yellow notice is not as serious as a red or orange alert, it nevertheless has important implications for locals and visitors.

A Yellow Alert: What is it?According to the IMD's four-color coding system, a Yellow Alert is a "be aware" warning. It warns that the weather could become disagreeable or slightly disruptive and encourages people to be aware and take simple safety measures. Depending on the season, yellow alerts are frequently issued during heatwaves, thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate to heavy rain.

Delhi-NCR weather updateAs the alert came into effect, heavy rainfall lashed parts of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad, leading to severe traffic snarls and waterlogging across several key roads.

According to news reports, major stretches such as Vikas Marg, Mathura Road, ITO, Ring Road, and Golf Course Road in Gurugram were submerged. Several underpasses were rendered unusable due to waist-deep water. Commuters were stuck for hours, and emergency services were stretched thin.

The Delhi Traffic Police also issued multiple advisories, asking commuters to avoid heavily flooded zones. Metro services were unaffected, but road transport came to a near standstill in many areas.

What travellers should knowEven though a Yellow Alert is not a red flag, it does require travellers to exercise caution. Here’s what to keep in mind:

Check real-time updatesAlways refer to IMD’s website, Delhi Traffic Police’s social media handles, and reliable news portals before heading out. Alerts may escalate quickly, as seen recently when heavy rain caught commuters off guard.
Avoid low-lying roadsSeveral underpasses and low areas like Minto Bridge, Palam, and ITO tend to flood quickly. Take alternate routes if possible.
Allow extra travel timeRain-induced congestion is common. Add buffer time for delays, especially if you're catching a train or flight.

Carry essentialsUmbrella, raincoat, charged phone, and power bank are must-haves during Yellow Alert days. Consider waterproof footwear and a backup for digital tickets or IDs.

Use public transportWhere possible, prefer Metro travel over cabs or personal vehicles, especially during peak hours.
