In a series that has already seen Shubman Gill’s brilliance shine through, the young India captain now stands on the cusp of making history by targeting world records held by the legendary Don Bradman while also edging closer to surpassing records set by Virat Kohli and Sunil Gavaskar. Having scored 585 runs in just the first two Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, Shubman Gill’s exceptional form has ignited discussions about his potential to redefine Test cricket benchmarks in the coming matches.

Shubman Gill’s standout performances included a spectacular 269 in the first innings followed by a resilient 161 in the second during the Edgbaston Test, enabling India to level the series. These innings not only marked the most runs by an Indian captain in an innings, surpassing Kohli’s record, but also the most runs by an Indian in a Test match, overtaking Gavaskar. Additionally, Shubman Gill became the first Asian captain to score a double century in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries and the first player globally to register both a double century and a 150 in the same Test, underlining his unique consistency and ability to dominate under pressure.

Closing in on Bradman’s iconic records

The immediate milestone within Shubman Gill’s reach is Don Bradman’s record for the most runs in a Test series as captain, with Bradman’s 810 runs set during the 1936-37 Ashes series. Shubman Gill requires just 225 more runs to surpass this tally, a target that appears well within his range considering his current form. Notably, Bradman achieved this milestone in his first series as captain, a record that Shubman Gill could also match in his debut series as India’s Test skipper.

Shubman Gill is also within striking distance of Bradman’s record for the highest runs in a single Test series overall. Bradman’s monumental 974 runs during the 1930 Ashes series in England has remained unchallenged for nearly a century. Shubman Gill, currently trailing by 390 runs with three matches still to be played, has the momentum and time required to challenge what has long been considered one of cricket’s most unassailable records. Bradman had scored 394 runs in the first two Tests of that historic series, while Shubman Gill has already accumulated 585, a promising indication of what could be a record-breaking finish.

Chasing the fastest 1000 runs as captain and century milestones

Bradman also holds the record for the fastest to 1000 Test runs as captain, having achieved the milestone in just 11 innings. Shubman Gill has an outside but realistic chance to match this record, requiring 415 runs in the next six innings. Maintaining consistency and building on his current form will be key for Shubman Gill as he seeks to join this elite list.

Shubman Gill’s form has also put him in contention to match or surpass the record for most centuries in a single Test series. West Indies legend Clyde Walcott holds this record with five centuries in a series against Australia in 1955. Shubman Gill, with three centuries already, could equal or even exceed this mark with three Tests remaining, aligning with Bradman’s personal best of four centuries in a series as captain during the 1947 series against India.

In addition to these world records, Shubman Gill is on track to break several India-specific records held by legends of the game. He is just 148 runs away from surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 732 runs as the most by an Indian captain in a series, and 18 runs shy of overtaking Rahul Dravid’s 602 runs, the most by an Indian batter in a Test series in England. Additionally, Shubman Gill is 127 runs away from surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the most runs by an Indian against England in any series and needs 91 more to overtake Virat Kohli’s 655 runs as the highest by an Indian captain against England.

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has expressed his belief in Shubman Gill’s potential to achieve these milestones, stating that while it remains to be seen if Shubman Gill will break Bradman’s iconic records, he certainly has the form and opportunity to do so.

As the series progresses, Shubman Gill’s determined charge towards cricket’s most prestigious records has added a fresh wave of excitement for Indian cricket fans, signalling a new era led by a captain whose hunger for runs and composure under pressure are propelling him towards historic greatness.
