The job of a teacher has always been a prestigious job. However, there have been many changes in the selection process. Earlier, no special course was required to become a teacher, but now a B.Ed degree has become mandatory for this. There are many other courses to become a teacher, including BTC. Both B.Ed and BTC are necessary courses to make a career in the field of education, but they are used and recognized in schools at different levels. Let us know what is beneficial in both of these, and what the difference is between the two?
In states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, only BTC is valid to become a teacher in government primary schools (classes 1-5), which is known as D.El.Ed. Those with B.Ed are not considered eligible for primary schools unless the government allows it. Although some relaxation was given some time ago on the instructions of the court and the central government, generally BTC/D.El.Ed is considered the standard qualification for primary schools.
Difference between B.Ed and BTC
Bachelor of Education, i.e., B.Ed, is a degree course, after completing which you become eligible to teach in secondary and higher secondary schools, while Basic Training Certificate (BTC) or Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) is a diploma course, through which you become eligible to teach in primary schools.
B.Ed vs BTC: Which is beneficial for whom?
B.Ed BTC (now D.El.Ed)
Duration 2 years (after graduation), 2 years (after 12th or after graduation)
Eligibility: Graduation 12th pass/Graduation with minimum 50% marks
Objective: To become a teacher for secondary and higher secondary classes (6 to 12th). To become a primary (class 1 to 5) and upper primary (class 6 to 8) teacher
Recognition Valid in NCTE and many states, mandatory for TGT/PGT Valid in primary teacher recruitment by NCTE and the state government
Recognition Invalid in government primary schools (B.Ed is not considered for primary teaching in many states) Valid (BTC/D.El.Ed is mandatory to become a primary teacher in UP and other states)
Entrance Exam: State/National level entrance exam. Often state-level exam (like UP D.El Ed entrance)
Why is BTC preferred in primary schools?
According to the Supreme Court's decision, BTC holders are given priority for teacher recruitment in primary schools, because BTC has been specially designed keeping primary education in mind. B.Ed holders may need additional training to become primary teachers, but BTC holders can directly become primary teachers.
