Throwback: When Kapil Sharma was allegedly duped of ₹5.7 crore for a customised vanity van; here's what happened

Kapil Sharma is currently making headlines as shots were fired at a restaurant reportedly linked to the comedian’s café in Canada. Kapil previously made it to the headlines when, in a bizarre turn of events back in 2020, he was allegedly duped of ₹5.7 crore. The comedian and television personality found himself not on stage cracking jokes, but at the center of a high-stakes financial controversy — one that involved luxury vehicles, fraud allegations, and a missing vanity van worth crores.
The controversy unraveled after Kapil reportedly filed a complaint with Mumbai’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW), claiming he had been cheated of ₹5.7 crore by a celebrity car designer. According to Kapil, the money had been paid in 2017 for a custom-built vanity van, but the van was never delivered.
Instead, Kapil alleged that the car designer not only failed to fulfill the order but also continued to demand more money, including parking charges — all without any product in hand.
The story resurfaced in headlines in early January 2021. The Mumbai Police’s Crime Intelligence Unit confirmed that they were preparing to register a new FIR against the car designer and his company for alleged cheating and misappropriation of funds. “Preliminary inquiry shows that it is a fit case of cheating and misappropriation of funds. We are in the process of registering the FIR,” said then Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Milind Bharambe.
The case took shape soon after Sharma, upon learning of the car designer’s earlier arrest on December 29, 2020, reached out to then Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh to revisit his complaint lodged months earlier. His statement was officially recorded shortly thereafter.
On the work front, Kapil continues to win the hearts of the audience. He is currently impressing fans with his stint on The Great Indian Kapil Show.
