ENG vs IND: Why Dhruv Jurel can keep wickets but not bat if Rishabh Pant remains unavailable for the rest of the Lord’s Test?

In a dramatic twist during the third Test at Lord’s, India vice-captain Rishabh pant suffered a painful finger injury while wicketkeeping, sending shockwaves through the Indian camp and fans worldwide. The incident occurred in the second session when Pant, attempting a diving collection down the leg side, was struck on his left index finger. The severity of the blow was evident as play was halted for several minutes, and Pant, after receiving medical attention, was replaced behind the stumps by Dhruv jurel for the remainder of the day. The uncertainty surrounding Pant’s fitness has led to a crucial question: Will he be able to bat, and if not, can Jurel take his place in the batting order?

Why Dhruv Jurel can keep but not bat for Rishabh Pant at Lord’s?

While cricket laws do allow for a substitute fielder or wicketkeeper in the event of an on-field injury, the rules for batting substitutions in Test cricket are far more restrictive. According to the current International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations, a substitute can only field or keep wickets; they are not permitted to bat, bowl, or captain the side. This means that if Pant is deemed unfit to bat, India will be forced to play with one batter short, a significant disadvantage given Pant’s stellar form in the series.

The confusion among fans was further fueled by the ICC’s recent announcement trialing “like-for-like” injury replacements in domestic first-class cricket, where a fully participating substitute can replace an injured player for the remainder of the match. However, this rule has not yet been extended to international Test matches. In Tests, the only exception permitting a full playing replacement is in the case of a concussion, as per the concussion substitute rule introduced in 2019. For other injuries, such as Pant’s finger injury, the substitute—here, Jurel—can only keep wickets and field, but cannot bat in Pant’s place.

Pant’s absence develops a strategic setback for India

Should Pant be unable to take the field as a batter, India’s team balance and strategy will take a significant hit. Pant has been one of the standout performers for India in this series, and losing his batting prowess could prove catastrophic, especially in a closely contested match at Lord’s. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Pant is under medical supervision, but has not provided clarity on his availability to bat, leaving the team and fans in suspense.

This scenario highlights the unique challenges posed by the current ICC regulations. While the concussion substitute rule offers teams some protection against head injuries, other forms of injury still leave teams exposed. The ongoing trials in domestic cricket may eventually pave the way for broader implementation of like-for-like replacements in Tests, but for now, India must hope for a swift recovery for their star wicketkeeper-batter.
