London, July 12:  Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant five-wicket haul gave India a much-needed breakthrough, but England’s lower-order resistance and early Indian top-order jitters have kept the visitors well ahead at the end of Day 2 of the third Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Lord’s. India finished the day at 145/3, trailing England by 242 runs, after bowling them out for 387 in 112.3 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah was the star with the ball, finishing with figures of 5 for 72, claiming his 11th five-wicket haul in Tests. His disciplined spells ensured that India could contain England, especially after a threatening partnership between Jamie Smith and Brydon Carse boosted the home side’s total.

Smith, continuing his impressive run in the series, played a composed knock, supported ably by Carse, who frustrated the Indian bowlers with valuable runs in the lower order. Despite regular breakthroughs, India couldn’t finish things early as England stretched their innings past 380.

In response, India had a shaky start. England’s pace spearhead Jofra Archer made an immediate impact, dismissing in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in his very first over. The early blow was followed by another setback when captain Shubman Gill, who has been among the runs this series, was removed by Chris Woakes for just 18.

KL Rahul then took charge and steadied the innings with a composed half-century, showing both patience and class. He found support from Karun Nair, who played confidently for his 40 runs, until he fell to a spectacular one-handed catch by Joe Root, shifting the momentum briefly in England’s favour.

Rishabh Pant, coming in at No. 5, showed maturity and resolve, guiding India safely to stumps. His ability to soak pressure while rotating the strike was vital in ensuring that India didn’t suffer further damage late in the day.

India ended the day at 145/3, with Pant unbeaten and looking solid, keeping hopes alive for a strong first-innings reply.
