Senior theater and film actress Shernaz Patel not only with her permanent performances, but also through the passion of her guide and storytelling, remains a guide power in the Indian performance art world. For decades, he has played many amazing characters. Nevertheless, he says that the new generation of artists keeps them creatively energetic.
Shernaz smilingly says, “The younger generation inspires me all the time. I love to live and learn from them. They are moving forward from boundaries and taking risks. They bring new approaches and a new energy that inspires me to become a better person and a better artist.” Even after years of experience, Patel insists that the meaning of living is a person to live. She says, “I think I am still a young man – I am still learning about the world and I am curious. If you feel that you have all the answers, it leads to stagnation.”
Their artistic direction points to stories that connect with human emotions. She says, “I am always influenced by stories, whether they are real or imaginary, where humans try to make the world a better place despite all the difficulties.” “Amidst so much sorrows in the world, I am looking for happiness and hopeful stories.”
When he was asked about his favorite performance, he admitted that there is not only one. “I love my first professional performance, or for a character in which I felt that I am excellent, or part of the vision of a team or director, which I am very much praised by heart. These are the memories that always remember.”
For a person who has played many roles – actress, teacher, art leader – what do people expect people think about them as soon as they hear their name? She says honestly, “I hope I have had some impact on her life.” “Whether through a role I played, or through projects operated by me, or also as a guide, teacher or good friend.”
There is another aspect of Shernaz about which many people may not know: their mission to make art-based education accessible for the deprived children. She explains, “I am a professional trained voice coach. My ambition is to deliver art-based training to underprivileged children.
His commitment to youth and education, his popular acting workshop, “Whats My Line?” Also affects, which is held during the summer Fiesta of NCPA and is especially designed for large teenagers. This workshop emphasizes how young artists can use language to make a script deeply individual. She explains, “I want to teach teenagers how they can make any screenplay enriched through their acting, so that they feel as if they have written those words.”
But it is not just about acting. Originally, the purpose of this workshop is to create a deep understanding towards the language. She says, “If they learn and move forward, I will be happy.”
And if she has to give only one advice to a young man dreaming of living a life on stage or screen, she says without any hesitation, “Do it. If you have a strong desire inside you, don’t let anyone stop.”
Considering her journey as a woman in theater and film world, Shernaz sees real progress. She says, “I have seen a dramatic change in the theater. Today, women are leading in every field – technical, construction, direction and writing. Female artists attract audiences. Women lead art organizations and training schools. In this way theater provides a very equal opportunity, and I am blessed to be a part of it.”
With his deep passion for performance, language and social change, Shernaz Patel is not only a favorite artist, but is an important power in shaping India’s developed art landscape.
