Chaturmas kya hota hai: In Hinduism, the time of Chaturmas is considered very sacred. This is the period when Lord Vishnu sleeps in Kshirsagar and the creation is run by Lord Shiva and other deities. But often the question arises in the minds of people that when the duration of Chaturmas is about 5 months, why is it called 'four' mass (ie four months)?

What is Chaturmas?

The words Chaturmas are made up of 'Chatu (Char) and' Mass' (month). It starts from Devshayani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashada month and runs till Devuthani Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. The duration between these two Ekadashis is about 150 days from about 148 days, which is equal to about 5 months.

The reason behind saying 4 months

Difference of solar and lunar calculation: The Hindu calendar is based on the lunar month, while the year is calculated according to the solar year. To maintain balance between these two calculations, one more month (Malamas or Purushottam month) is added every third year. When there is more mass during Chaturmas, its duration increases to 5 months. However, traditionally its original period is considered to be four months, in which more mass is considered 'extra' or 'added' mass.

Main four months importance

Shravan, Bhadrapada, Ashwin and Karthik are considered very important during Chaturmas. Various Teej-festivals and fasts occur in these months, which have special religious significance.

  • Shravan month: Dedicated to worship Lord Shiva.
  • Bhadrapada month: Festivals like Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi.
  • Ashwin Mass: Navratri and Dussehra.
  • Kartik month: Deepawali and Devuthani Ekadashi.

Weather and agricultural cycle

Chaturmas have been connected to the rainy season since ancient times. In these four months, the monsoon is at its peak, which made it difficult to travel and people used to stay in one place and meditate, worship and study. It was also an important time for the agricultural cycle, when the farmers focused on their crops. The activities related to this season were covered in these four months only.

More mass and its effect

When more mass comes in Chaturmas, it is considered dedicated to Lord Vishnu. During this time, auspicious works (such as marriage, home entry) are stopped, but the importance of religious rituals, worship, charity and pilgrimage increases. This additional month offers a special opportunity for self-thinking and practice.

So even though the duration of Chaturmas sometimes turns 5 months old, it is traditionally called 'Char' month, because its original calculation is based on four major lunar months. Therefore more mass is considered a 'extra' mass.
