WhatsApp is gearing up to launch an exciting new feature for its millions of Android users — Motion Pictures. This upcoming tool will allow users to add movement effects and audio to their photos before sending them in chats, creating a richer, more dynamic messaging experience. Currently, the feature is in the testing phase on Android beta version 2.25.22.29 and is expected to deliver an experience somewhat similar to Instagram’s motion videos or Boomerang.
According to a report from WABetaInfo, the Motion Picture feature has been spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta release for Android. At the moment, it is available only to users enrolled in WhatsApp’s beta program via Google Play. Since this is still in the trial stage, the feature is being tested among a limited group before its wider public rollout.
Interestingly, this development comes alongside WhatsApp’s work on another much-awaited functionality — username support. Once introduced, this will allow users to connect with others by simply using a username instead of saving their phone number, adding more flexibility and privacy to messaging.
When users select an image from their gallery in WhatsApp, they will see a new icon appear in the top-right corner of the image selection screen. Tapping this icon will transform the static photo into a Motion Picture. Users will then be able to embed audio into the moving image, giving it a more immersive feel.
On the recipient’s side, these Motion Pictures will feature a small play button overlay, making it clear that the image is not static. This ensures that the user knows to tap and enjoy the movement and sound.
Currently, the feature is optimized for certain flagship Android devices, including select models from Samsung and Google. However, WhatsApp is expected to expand compatibility to a broader range of devices in the near future.
While WhatsApp already allows users to send videos, GIFs, and voice notes, Motion Pictures fill a unique space — combining the expressiveness of video with the casual sharing style of photos. For users, it means they can make everyday images more engaging, whether it’s adding background music to a birthday photo or creating a moving snapshot of a scenic location.
It’s also a nod to the growing trend of multimedia storytelling on social platforms, where features like Instagram’s Boomerang and TikTok’s short videos have gained massive popularity. WhatsApp appears to be merging these trends directly into its core messaging experience.
In a related update, WhatsApp has revealed in its compliance report that it banned 9.8 million accounts in India during June 2025. The bans were largely due to violations such as spreading misinformation, engaging in scams, or breaking platform policies. This isn’t the first time WhatsApp has taken such large-scale action — the platform regularly removes millions of accounts to keep the service safe and free from abuse.
There’s no official launch date yet, but given the beta testing phase is underway, the feature could roll out to the public in the coming months. Users keen to try it early can join WhatsApp’s beta program on the Google Play Store, though availability may be limited.
For now, Motion Pictures remain one of the most anticipated updates for WhatsApp users in 2025, promising to make conversations more vibrant and expressive. Whether you want to add a musical twist to your favorite memories or surprise friends with animated snaps, this new tool could change how we share moments forever.
