Trent Alexander-Arnold has responded after former Liverpool team-mate Darwin Nunez announced his move to Saudi Arabia with an emotional statement. Nunez, 26, has joined Saudi Pro Leaguegiants Al-Hilal for an initial fee of £46.2million.

The Uruguayan played alongside Alexander-Arnold for all three of his full seasons at Anfield but the pair have both departed this summer. After completing his medical with Al-Hilal, Nunez took to Instagram and wrote a statement thanking Liverpool, who he scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for.

"Thank you, Liverpool," the striker wrote. "Three years on, it's time to say goodbye. I'll take with me countless memories that will live with me forever.

"I leave with a full heart, thanks to the love of a crowd that never let me down and always had my back - through the highs and through the lows. Liverpool will always be part of who I am.

"I'll miss you more than words can say. To all the staff and my teammates - thank you, and all the very best for the future. YNWA."

Alexander-Arnold was among the more the 433,000 users who 'liked' the post. Fellow ex-team-mates Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, Alisson Becker, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch, Conor Bradley and Stefan Bajcetic also liked his post.

Nunez's departure is set to help fund Liverpool's British-record second bid for Alexander Isak, having already seen an offer of £120m turned down. The Reds also sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich for £65.5m last month.

Despite having entered the final few weeks of his contract, Alexander-Arnold's move to Real Madrid also brought in a fee of £10m. The 26-year-old will begin life in La Liga next Tuesday when Real host Osasuna.

His replacement at Liverpool, Jeremie Frimpong, scored on his debut for the Reds against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield. Frimpong ended up on the losing side, though, as Palace won a penalty shootout following their 2-2 draw.

But will Slot replace Nunez before transfer deadline day on Monday, September 1? "We think we already have a lot of attacking power in our team," the Liverpool manager said last week.

"I think about Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike, Mo Salah, Jeremie Frimpong who can play as a right winger, Florian Wirtz who can play as a left winger... I already feel I have a lot of attacking options in my squad, but always as a club we are looking at the chances in the market but that can also be in the midfield and the last line."
