In Mumbai, Rohit Sharma, the captain of India's ODI team, has kicked off his training sessions at a local facility alongside former national assistant coach Abhishek Nayar. This comes amid discussions about implementing a 'youth-only' strategy for the 50-over format, inspired by the recent success of a young Test squad in England.
After taking a break following the IPL, Rohit returned from a family vacation in England last week. He had previously announced his retirement from Test cricket before the five-match series in England, now focusing solely on ODIs.
Rohit shared an Instagram story showcasing his workout at the gym with Nayar, who occasionally serves as his personal coach.
Nayar, who has previously coached players like Dinesh Karthik, KL Rahul, and Rinku Singh, was an assistant coach until the Champions Trophy, after which he was let go. Those who have trained with him, including Rahul, have praised the improvements he has made to their games, with Rahul scoring 532 runs in the England Test series after working with Nayar.
This training session suggests that Rohit is not ready to retire just yet and aims to be part of the 50-over World Cup in 2027, which is still 26 months away.
The current selection committee is focused on establishing a stable core for the ODI team, ensuring that players are available for the next two years.
There is a perspective within the Indian team management that Rohit should be given a farewell series, potentially against Australia, with Shubman Gill being named as the new ODI captain.
However, the views of the selection committee and the influential figures within the BCCI will play a crucial role in these decisions.
Rohit Sharma is an ODI legend, boasting 32 centuries, ranking third on the all-time list behind Virat Kohli (51) and Sachin Tendulkar (49). Notably, he was named 'Player of The Match' in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand.
