Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma's International Careers Over Soon? They May Not Play 2027 WC!

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are now active in just one international format and that is ODI cricket. Both of them retired from T20Is in 2024 and called time on their Test careers in May. Now they both want to play till the 2027 World Cup before bowing out of international cricket. But their retirements could come even sooner. ‘King' and ‘Hitman’ may never play the World Cup.

There is a lot of speculation that the ODI series in Australia that begins on October 19 could be Kohli and Rohit’s farewell. There are reports doing rounds that the BCCI has no intention of including Kohli and Rohit in their plans for the World Cup. Both of them last played international cricket over five months ago in the Champions Trophy final that India won.

Rohit has been around since 2007 and has just turned 38. Kohli is closing in on 37 and made his ODI entry back in 2008. These two for over a decade formed the backbone of India’s batting across formats. Two of those formats are no longer in the mix. So it remains to be seen what the future holds for them in ODIs.

Kohli has played 290 ODI innings from 302 games. He has scored 14,181 runs at an average of 57.88 with 45 not-outs and 51 100s plus 74 50s. His top score is 183. Rohit meanwhile has represented India in 273 ODIs and has batted on 265 occasions scoring 11,168 runs at an average of 48.77. Not to mention a personal best of 264 with 32 100s and 58 50s plus 36 not-outs.

Individually they are brilliant but together they are lethal. But time is not on their side as both Rohit and Kohli are pushing 40. Both have played together, under each other and have brought a lot of glory to India. Their absence will leave a void but it is going to happen sooner or later.

How long will these two play for India? The future is not set in stone. Will we see them at the World Cup in 2027? Not impossible but very difficult! Kohli and Rohit have to battle time, fitness, form and maybe even the selectors to ensure selection for the World Cup. Whatever fate has in store of them, the fact that they are legends of Indian cricket is an undisputable fact.
