On Thursday morning, light rain was recorded in various parts of Delhi-NCR, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to upgrade its weather alert from 'Yellow' to 'Red'. Continuous rainfall was observed in areas of the national capital, Noida, and Gurugram. This recent downpour follows heavy rains earlier this week that had already caused significant disruptions, including delays and cancellations of numerous flights on Tuesday.
The torrential rain has thrown daily life into disarray in the national capital, leading to severe flooding in several areas. Between 8 AM and 10 AM, the heavy rainfall resulted in traffic jams, causing considerable inconvenience for commuters. In Subroto Park, the service lane beyond Dhaula Kuan was inundated due to sewer overflow, and further rainfall is expected to exacerbate the situation.
Reports of significant waterlogging have also emerged near the Akshardham flyover, where accumulated water led to prolonged traffic congestion.
The IMD has predicted continued rainfall in Delhi-NCR until August 16. According to the IMD, light to moderate rain is expected across most areas in the region over the next 2-3 hours.
In its bulletin at 5:55 AM, the IMD indicated that the updated nowcast map shows moderate to intense rainfall primarily affecting Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, northern Madhya Pradesh, and western Uttar Pradesh.
An orange alert has been issued for several northern districts of Uttar Pradesh, where heavy rainfall is anticipated. The affected districts include Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Lakhimpur, Sitapur, Bahraich, Shravasti, Gonda, Balrampur, Siddharthnagar, and Maharajganj.
The IMD has also forecasted rain or thunderstorms in most parts of western Uttar Pradesh and some areas in the east on Wednesday and Thursday. It is expected that the intensity and spread of rainfall will decrease after August 15, with potential thunderstorms in some locations.
In light of the adverse weather conditions, all government and private schools in Lucknow for grades 1 to 12 will remain closed today, as stated by District Magistrate Vishakh G. Ayyar.
The weather department has issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall across the country. With intensified monsoon activities in most states, the IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in various locations in Uttarakhand.
Heavy rainfall is also expected in different parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, with isolated heavy showers in Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. Thunderstorms or lightning are possible in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, with strong winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h in Jammu and Kashmir.
