If you have important banking tasks lined up for Janmashtami this year, you might want to double-check the holiday list before stepping out. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) official calendar, the festival falls on Saturday, August 16, 2025, which also happens to be the third Saturday of the month. Normally, banks remain open on third Saturdays, but in many states, they will be closed this time due to the festival.
As per RBI’s updated holiday schedule, banks will remain shut on August 16 in the following states and union territories:
Uttar Pradesh
Uttarakhand
Rajasthan
Gujarat
Madhya Pradesh
Bihar
Jharkhand
Chhattisgarh
Sikkim
Telangana
Tamil Nadu
Andhra Pradesh
Meghalaya
Mizoram
Jammu
Srinagar
Chandigarh
If you are based in any of these regions, you’ll need to plan your branch visits on another day. However, digital banking services such as ATMs, internet banking, and mobile banking will remain available, ensuring you can still make transactions, withdraw cash, or transfer funds without disruption.
In other parts of India, it will be business as usual for banks on August 16. Branches will remain fully operational in:
Delhi
Mumbai
Karnataka
Maharashtra
Odisha
Assam
Tripura
Manipur
Arunachal Pradesh
Kerala
Nagaland
West Bengal
Goa
Himachal Pradesh
This means customers in these states can carry out their in-person banking transactions as usual.
It’s important to note that Friday, August 15, 2025, is Independence Day, which is a national public holiday. On this day, all public and private sector banks across the country will remain closed. Stock exchanges BSE and NSE will also be shut for the day. The closure applies to all states and union territories.
Apart from Independence Day, August 15 also marks Parsi New Year (Pateti) and Janmashtami in some regions. While bank branches will be closed, online and mobile banking services will be unaffected.
August 16 (Saturday) – Janmashtami (Krishna Janmashtami / Shravan Vad-8) – Holiday in several states including Chennai, Hyderabad, Ranchi, and Jammu.
August 19 (Tuesday) – Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur’s Birth Anniversary – Holiday only in Agartala.
August 25 (Monday) – Srimanta Sankardev Tirobhav Tithi – Holiday in Guwahati.
August 27 (Wednesday) – Ganesh Chaturthi / Samvatsari / Ganesh Puja – Holiday in cities like Mumbai, Nagpur, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
August 28 (Thursday) – Second day of Ganesh Chaturthi / Nuakhai – Holiday in Bhubaneswar and Panaji.
Janmashtami, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, as per the Hindu calendar. However, the exact date and holiday declaration can vary between states due to differences in regional calendars and customs. That’s why banks in some states will remain closed while others will continue normal operations.
If you have urgent banking work—such as depositing cheques, updating passbooks, or visiting lockers—it’s wise to complete it before August 15 or schedule it for a day when your local branch is confirmed open.
Remember, even if your branch is closed, most essential services are now available online, meaning you can still make payments, transfer funds, and manage accounts from the comfort of your home.
