Bournemouth lose to Liverpool
Liverpool kicked off their Premier League title defense with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield a night filled with both high drama and deep emotion as the club paid tribute to Diogo Jota.
In their first competitive game at home since the tragic passing of Jota last month, Anfield came together to honor the Portuguese forward. A minute’s silence was held before kickoff in memory of both Jota and his brother, André Silva, who lost their lives in a car accident in early July. Fans sang Jota’s name throughout the night and held banners in his memory, creating a poignant atmosphere.
On the pitch, the Reds looked sharp early on, with goals from Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo giving them a 2-0 lead. But Bournemouth clawed back through Antoine Semenyo, who scored twice in the second half to level the score.
With the match hanging in the balance, Federico Chiesa struck in the 88th minute to restore Liverpool’s lead, before Mohamed Salah sealed the win deep into stoppage time. At the final whistle, an emotional Salah applauded the Kop, visibly moved as fans continued to sing for Jota.
It was a fitting tribute and a strong start to the season for Liverpool on a night that meant so much more than just football.
