A growing number of teenagers across the world are now using caffeine pouches for an instant rush of energy and dopamine, say experts who worry that the trend comes with extreme health risks.
The small teabag-like pouches that are to be placed between the lip and gum deliver a quick caffeine hit straight to your bloodstream. Many Western social media influencers are pushing products and recommending them to those who are involved in fitness and gym activities, along with students who go for performance or to students who want to be alert for exams. On social media sites like TikTok, caffeine pouches are available in various styles, shapes, and sizes to attract youngsters. Doctors say a single pouch contains as much caffeine as two cups of regular coffee, which can be hazardous. What happens due to excess caffeine in your blood? Doctors say an overdose may happen when you consume too much caffeine, which makes you sick. It is also sometimes called 'caffeine toxicity' - a type of poisoning. According to experts, around 9 in 10 people in the US have at least some caffeine every day. In small amounts, it has a stimulant effect - it can make you feel more awake, alert, or like you have extra energy. While it is considered safe for most people, too much caffeine can cause a significant amount of damage. Experts say that when you exercise, your body produces a chemical called adenosine, which makes you feel tired. Caffeine blocks the adenosine receptors in your nerves, so your brain perceives less pain and fatigue. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, most adults can safely consume 400 milligrams of caffeine daily, which is around two to three 12-ounce cups of coffee. Doctors say kids younger than two years should not have any caffeine. Children and teens should avoid highly caffeinated energy drinks. Everyone's body responds differently to caffeine. Some people naturally have a higher tolerance to its effects than others. Certain health conditions and medications can make you more sensitive to its effects. A few known implications of caffeine overdose include: High anxiety Caffeine causes an increase in levels of alertness. It works by blocking the effects of adenosine and triggering adrenaline, the fight-or-flight hormone associated with increased energy. However, at higher doses, these effects become more pronounced, leading to anxiety and nervousness. Digestion issues While caffeine helps many find caffeine helpful in regular bowel movements, its laxative effect is attributed to the release of gastrin, which speeds up activity in the colon. However, large doses of caffeine can cause loose stools or even diarrhoea. Insomnia Caffeine helps you stay awake but can also make it difficult to get enough restorative sleep. According to experts, higher caffeine intake increases the amount of time it takes to fall asleep, resulting in insomnia. High blood pressure While caffeine gives you energy, large amounts can also raise blood pressure levels due to its stimulatory effect on the nervous system. Elevated blood pressure is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke, as it can damage arteries over time, restricting the flow of blood to your heart and brain.
