Severe three-hour delays and 14.5-mile queues were reported on the M5. The disruption was caused by emergency road surface repairs taking place between Junctions 19 (Portishead) and 18 (Bristol), where three of the four lanes on the Avonmouth Bridge were closed to allow the works to take place safely.

Hot weather slowed the tarmac curing process, delaying the completion of the road repairs. National Highways urged drivers to allow extra time for their journeys with heavy congestion lasting several hours.
