The next chapter in the rebooted DC Universe is finally returning this week and reviews have been stellar across the board.

James Gunn’s Peacemaker, starring John Cena as the patriotic anti-hero, is premiering on HBO Max today (Thursday, 21st August) and the following day on Sky Max and NOW in the UK.

Originally premiering in 2022, the smash-hit superhero drama is back after a lengthy wait and is following up the director’s blockbuster Superman with action, comedy and spoilers galore.

Season two follows Chris Smith, aka Peacemaker, on the run from Rick Flag Sr (played by Frank Grillo) as he discovers an alternate dimension where he has the chance to live the perfect life.

Just five episodes of the new season were handed out to press for reviews, as Gunn warns there are some massive spoilers coming in the final episodes he wants to keep a tightly guarded secret.

The showrunner joked to journalist Brandon Davis: "It could mean they're terrible. That is one option. Or it could mean that there's a lot of major twists and turns in the last three episodes.

“And even though I'm sending the first five to a select few, things still get out as you know. Things got out already. You know, people who want to search can be spoiled on purpose, but I really don't want what's in those last three episodes to be spoiled.

“And so I'm keeping them close to the chest. I won't even let my publicist see them. That's the god's honest truth.”

Thankfully, the first five episodes are strong enough to warrant stellar reviews from critics, landing it an incredible 98 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nerdist said: “Peacemaker continues to kill it as a wildly entertaining, funny, emotional story with great, complex characters and themes.”

Comicbook.com agreed: “Peacemaker season two has the same flood of heart as Superman, is another excellent exercise in world-building, and by virtue of feeling more like a pure expression of Gunn as a creator, I’d confidently say it’s the better of the two.”

Screen Rant joined the conversation: “Peacemaker season two recaptures everything that made season one so special, but it tells a whole new story with a surprisingly great multiversal twist.”

Finally, Empire raved: “Anchored by great work from John Cena, Peacemaker’s second season raises its already high bar with a well-judged blend of heart, madness, and an a**-kicking eagle.”
