Botic van de Zandschulp suffered an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction during a match at the Winston-Salem Open. The experienced Dutchman is among the favourites to lift the trophy in North Carolina this week. After the tournament ends, he will head to the US Open where he will face Holger Rune in the opening round.
Van de Zandschulp has already made it through to the quarter-finals of the Winston-Salem Open. He won the opening set of his last-eight clash against Yunchaokete Bu before play was suspended due to rain. The match will be completed on Friday with Van de Zandschulp leading by four games to three in the second set.
During the early stages of the match, the 29-year-old was involved in an awkward conversation with the umpire. The official noticed that he had forgotten to remove the tag out of his shorts and informed him of the mishap during a changeover.
"I can see the label for the shorts inside, the label of the shorts," said the umpire, before adding: "You can take it off if you want to."
Van de Zandschulp initially looked puzzled as he tried to understand what the umpire was saying. He chose not to respond, instead adjusting his shorts from the back before walking back onto the court to resume play.
The former US Open quarter-finalist is not the only player to have suffered a wardrobe malfunction in recent weeks. Last month, Daria Kasatkina lost a point at Wimbledon because one of her her earrings got caught in her shirt.
While in the process of hitting a shot against Liudmila Samsonova, the Aussie raised her shoulder to her ear. It caused her jewellery to get tangled up, leaving her unable to respond to a routine backhand from her opponent.
Last year, reigning Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng was involved in a mishap of her own at the Pan Pacific Open. Before the start of her match against Moyuka Uchijima, she was informed that a label was sticking out of her new outfit.
Uchijima initially tried to take it off for Zheng, who walked away towards the baseline before she could grab it. She laughed when she eventually realised the error and removed the label shortly before her first serve of the match.
Van de Zandschulp will be hoping to avoid making the same mistake again at the US Open. He will need to be at his very best to steer clear of an early exit, with Rune heading into their match as the overwhelming favourite to win.
The draw has thrown up some interesting ties, with Carlos Alcaraz facing Reilly Opelka in the opening round. The big-hitting American has been known to serve in excess of 140 miles per hour, meaning the Spaniard could face a tough test.
Novak Djokovic takes on Learner Tien, who made it to round four of this year's Australian Open with a string of impressive victories. Jannik Sinner, meanwhile, will open his title defence against Czech underdog Vit Kopriva.
