For many, having a well-decorated home that reflects them as people is important. This can be in the way the choose to paint the walls, or the furniture and decorations they choose to add to their home.
However, this can often be trickier than it sounds, as the task of decorating your home often can become more overwhelming than you might have first expected.
To help, interior designer Harriet Kingdon, who is the founder of HLK Interiors, has shared her top tips on how to decorate your home. Working under the belief that a well-decorated home should be achievable for anyone, Harriet took to TikTok to share the four mistakes people often make when decorating their homes.
"I've been an interior designer for three years and these four things still surprise me," she wrote at the start of the video.
She then took to the caption of the video to explain the differnet mistakes, and the easy ways you can fix them.
1. Leaving hallways plain and whiteFirst on her list is the room that will be the first impression of your home - the hallway. As most hallways usually are quite narrow, it can be difficult to know how to decorate them, which may result in people just leaving them plain, much to Harriet's dismay.
Instead, she recommends playing around with colours and taking advantage of the different parts of the room that you could add colour or texture to to make it more interesting.
"It's the first impression of your home! Paint the doors, skirting, or even the ceiling to make it interesting," she said.
2. Plain bedroomsNext up on her list, Harriet complained about people leaving their bedrooms plain and without decorations.
"Sorry, but plain bedding and no artwork is just boring. You spend half your life in there, make it feel like you," she said.
A simple way to rectify this 'mistake' could be to get an interesting bedding set, or adding decorative pillows and throws to your bed to make it more interesting. Similarly, you could also get photos or artwork to the walls to make them less plain.
3. Gallery walls 'done wrong'If you do decide to decorate your walls with paintings and photos, gallery walls have recently become a popular way to do it. For this, all you do is pick out different artworks and hang them together on the same wall.
However, Harriet warned that you should double check where you choose to hang the artworks in order not to ruin the effect.
"Artwork hung too high or too far apart kills the effect," she said. "Keep it at eye level and tight together for impact."
4. Not using dimmable lightingFinally, a lot of people might not realise just how important the right kind of lighting is for your home. While a bright ceiling light is good for when you need to clean the room, it often becomes too harsh and 'ruins the mood' when you want a cosy evening in.
Because of this, Harriet explained her disbelief that people don't have dimmable lighting fixtures in their homes, as this could easily fix this proble,
"So many homes still don't use dimmable lighting..Mood matters! Not every moment calls for a full blast of brightness," she said.
