Living the “fast life” says more about a person than their proclivity for risk-taking.
How do you tell if your man’s a psychopath? They’ve got an amazing online game, apparently.
German scientists have revealed that those who have a high hookup rate on dating apps are more likely to be psychopaths.
“Individuals who have elevated levels of traits associated with a fast life history (like the Dark Triad/Tetrad traits, or sociosexuality) use visual social media platforms more intensely,” study author Lennart Freyth, research director of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Institute and a professor at the Hochschule Döpfer University of Applied Sciences in Colognetold PsyPost.
The study, published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networkingexplored the relationship between certain psychological profiles and success on these digital romance platforms, which have been linked to various mental health issues.
While prior research had centered around the personalities of dating app users, there hadn’t been much focus on which traits predict what outcomes — until now.
“When I started my research in the area of dating apps and social media, I dived deeper into theoretical explanations of our behavior,” explained Freyth. “Considering personality a behavioral disposition, I was indeed wondering: why was nobody going for the most obvious elements of dating apps?”
To determine what characteristics predict dating app sexcess, he and his team asked nearly 500 dating app users to complete a series of questionnaires measuring various traits and behaviors.
Participants were asked whether they had gone on a “Tinder date” — a date arranged through a hookup app — and whether they had sex with someone they met on this virtual wingman service.
The researchers then analyzed personality and behavioral characteristics predicted each outcome, using validated scales to determine the three so-called “Dark Triad” traits — narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy — along with attitudes toward casual sex, sexual desire, and prior sexual behavior.
The team found that while the same number of women had gone on a Tinder-date, men were more likely to bed someone they met through a hookup app — 66% of those who had Tinder-sex were men.
These sexcessful online daters tended to be younger and displayed higher rates of narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy. These dating app assassins also scored higher in all three aspects of sociosexuality: more favorable attitudes toward casual sex, greater sexual desire, and more sexual experience
The researchers warned that these promiscuous pickup artists could potentially be more likely to exploit and target vulnerable individuals online. “Individuals with a faster life strategy, particularly men high in psychopathy and sexual desires, report more mating success via dating apps,” the researchers wrote, per the Daily Mail.
The results aligned with prior studies claiming that psychopathic men have more success in one-night stands and casual sex.
By contrast, these traits did not hold true for men who had not experienced online flings or for women in either group.
However, the study did reveal that women who had experienced more Tinder-sex were more likely to report being satisfied with their choices than female participants who did not.
Researchers surmised that these woman may have put more effort into the initial messaging phase and were therefore more likely to accept disappointment in the flesh.
“Women who reported sex via dating apps lowered their standards compared to women not having Tinder–sex,” said Freyth. “We were surprised by women lowering their standards on a date.”
He added, “We consider this something like a sunk cost effect – after already texting, once on a date, the decision to engage further was already made.”
Of course, there are a few caveats to the study, including the reliance on self-reported data. Researchers worried that the results could be tainted by gendered reporting biases — the men might’ve inflated their numbers while women underreported their experiences.
So, how does one tell if their female partner is a psychopath? They wear less makeup, for one, per a surprising study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior.
The researchers found that women who scored highly on the psychopathy scale were less likely to put on lipstick, eyeliner and blush in all social situations.
“These findings underscore the nuanced relationship between makeup usage and personality,” the study authors stated, saying that women who donned lots of makeup were also found to be more agreeable in most social settings.
