A significant political controversy has emerged following comments made by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This has prompted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to lodge a police complaint against her.
The BJP took issue with Moitra's statement suggesting that Shah should face severe consequences for his handling of undocumented immigration into India. In response, the Trinamool Congress clarified that her words were not intended to be taken literally.
During a press conference in Nadia district, West Bengal, the Krishnanagar MP accused Shah of failing to prevent illegal immigration at the borders, emphasizing that the Border Security Force operates under the Union home ministry.
Moitra pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often claimed that illegal immigrants are encroaching on Indian land. She questioned who is responsible for safeguarding the borders against such intrusions.
She recalled Modi's remarks during his arrest at the Red Fort on Independence Day, where he mentioned that infiltrators were altering demographics. Moitra noted that Shah was present, seemingly indifferent, while these statements were made.
She provocatively suggested that if the country lacks border protection and citizens are expressing concerns about infiltrators threatening their families and seizing land, then drastic measures against Shah should be considered.
The BJP has filed a formal complaint at the Kotwali Police Station in Krishnanagar, labeling Moitra's comments as 'anti-national' and 'anti-state'.
BJP spokesperson Sandeep Majumdar condemned the remarks, while party leader Rahul Sinha criticized them as distasteful and indicative of Moitra's mindset and that of her party.
Sinha demanded clarity on whether these views represent the official stance of the Trinamool Congress, urging them to apologize and take action against Moitra if they do not.
In a social media post, Moitra responded to the backlash, suggesting that the BJP's strategy involves amplifying her comments on social media to create a viral narrative.
She humorously embraced the controversy, stating that her metaphorical expression had been misinterpreted.
Kunal Ghosh, a fellow party member, defended Moitra, asserting that her comments were merely figurative and should not be taken literally.
This incident occurs amid reports of Bengali-speaking migrant workers, primarily Muslims, being detained across the country due to suspicions of their nationality. The Trinamool Congress has accused the BJP of perpetrating 'linguistic terror' against Bengali speakers.
