Is Avocado Really Helping With Weight Loss Or Delaying It?

Walk into any cafe today and you will spot avocado everywhere - on toast, in smoothies, whipped into desserts and what not. Scroll through your reels and you will see every second person preparing an avocado recipe.
And why not? It has been deemed as a superfood by wellness enthusiasts. Many people also swear by it as the ultimate weight-loss hack. After all, it is creamy, filling and has that "healthy fat" tag attached to it. The real question, however, is: If avocado is actually helping you shed kilos or could it secretly be slowing things down for you? Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats and fibre. These are two features that tend to keep you fuller for a longer duration. In many controlled meal studies, swapping like-for-like calories from refined carbs for avocado fat-and-fibre combinations increased post-meal fullness. In fact, it reduced the desire to eat for several hours. This made it easier for people to stick to a calorie deficit. When researchers gave adults one whole avocado, a day for six months, and told them otherwise to eat as usual, they did not see clinically meaningful reductions in abdominal fat or body weight - as compared with a control group. A 2022 multicentre trial and follow-ups also showed similar conclusion: Pleasant to eat, cardiometabolic markers may improve modestly, but body weight is unchanged unless overall energy intake comes down. Avocado Can Be A Clever Choice From the perspective of heart health, replacing saturated fats, for instance, butter, ghee, fatty meats, with unsaturated fats from foods like avocado aligns with guidance from the American Heart Association and can support long-term cardiometabolic health. That swap will not automatically drop the number on the scale but it will improve diet quality and also help in the adherence by enhancing satisfaction. It is also important to note that avocados are relatively low in digestible carbohydrate and high in fibre. This reduces post-meal glucose spikes and supports appetite regulation. All in all, it is important to understand that Avocado can help with weight loss when it replaces less healthy calories and improves meal satisfaction. On the other hand, it can delay weight loss when it is an extra that quietly lifts your daily energy intake. Eat smart and you will get it all right!
