Rising television actress Maria Malik has spoken candidly about the contrasting realities of the showbiz industry, stating that while it may appear safe from the outside, it does not offer the same experience for everyone.

In a recent interview with FUCHSIA MagazineMaria reflected on her three-year journey in the entertainment world, shedding light on both the opportunities and challenges she has faced.

Maria revealed that when she first entered the industry, she aspired to play lead roles. However, she was mostly offered supporting characters—typically as the lead actress’s friend or sister. “I used to decline those offers,” she said, adding that this often led to a noticeable change in attitude from producers.

“They would behave as if I hadn’t done anything significant and was being unreasonably selective,” Maria recalled. “Producers don’t take it well when you say no.”

However, things began to change once Maria gained recognition and success. She explained that the same production houses that once dismissed her started offering her lead rolesand she now appears frequently in prime-time dramas airing at 7 and 9 PM.

While proud of her growth, Maria noted a lack of constructive feedback on these popular time slots. “We all work hard and want to know how we’re doing or where we can improve. But unless a drama becomes extremely popular, it doesn’t really get noticed or discussed,” she said.

On the subject of the industry’s darker aspects, Maria maintained that her personal experience has been largely safe and positive but acknowledged hearing distressing stories from fellow actors. “This place is not unsafe for everyone, but unfortunately, it’s not equally safe for everyone either,” she added.

She credited her relatively smooth journey to working with good people, emphasizing that positive experiences are possible when surrounded by professionals with integrity.

Maria also shared her personal boundaries, stating that she avoids unnecessary socializing and refrains from attending events un to her work. “If someone’s attitude seems off, I simply distance myself. It’s better to control your own actions than expect others to change,” she explained.

Maria’s thoughtful reflections offer a grounded look at the complex nature of Pakistan’s entertainment industry—where persistence, self-respect, and the right company can make all the difference.
