Netflix has unveiled the first chilling trailer for the upcoming season of Monster: The Ed Gein Story.

This true crime series is a continuation of the popular anthology show created by Ryan Murphy.

Now in its third outing, previous seasons have delved into the lives of notorious killers including Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers.

The forthcoming season will spotlight the life and heinous crimes of Ed Gein, with Charlie Hunnam of Sons of Anarchy fame stepping into the role.

As highlighted in the trailer and previously released posters, Gein is reputed to have inspired some of the most iconic horror films.

This includes Psycho, The Silence of the Lambs and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

According to the synopsis provided by Netflix, in the icy fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a seemingly friendly, mild-mannered loner named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a dilapidated farm. However, he was concealing a house of horrors so shocking it would redefine the American nightmare, reports the Mirror.

Fuelled by isolation, psychosis, and an unhealthy obsession with his mother, Gein's twisted crimes gave birth to a new breed of monster that would terrorise Hollywood for decades.

From Psycho to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Silence of the Lambs, Gein's gruesome legacy spawned fictional monsters moulded in his image and sparked a cultural fascination with the criminally deviant. Ed Gein didn't just influence a genre, he became the blueprint for modern horror.

The series is set to delve into the macabre world of Gein, who confessed to exhuming corpses from local graveyards and fashioning items and clothing from human skin. The trailer gives a glimpse of this, showing a moment one viewer described as 'genuinely terrifying' in a scene where Gein tries on a horrifying mask made from what appears to be the skin of one of his victims.

Netflix describes Monster: The Ed Gein Story as the tale of how an ordinary man from Plainfield, Wisconsin became history's most notorious ghoul. It reveals the chilling truth that monsters aren't born, they're created...by us.

The trailer has already sparked excitement among fans. One viewer commented on YouTube: "The guy was the original Leatherface, and Bates, crazy."

Another chimed in: "This looks way scarier than the first two seasons omgg."

A third added: "Charlie Hunnam looks so much like Ed Gein it's eerie. Great casting."

One social media user expressed their anticipation, saying: "Sounds and looks chilling. Love seeing Charlie Hunnam take on the role."

Monster: The Ed Gein Story is streaming on Netflix from October 3.
