Residents of Kheri village, located in the Bantalab region of Jammu, report that between 15 to 20 homes have suffered damage or complete destruction due to landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains in recent days. The continuous rainfall has caused significant soil erosion, leading to deep fissures that have made many houses unsafe, forcing families to seek refuge in temporary shelters.
With the ground still unstable and the threat of further rainfall looming, it is imperative for residents to relocate to safer areas immediately. Many displaced families, who have invested their life savings into their homes, are now facing extremely challenging living conditions.
Javed, one of the affected residents, expressed his despair, stating, "Our house, which took years of hard work to build, is now in ruins. We have nowhere to go and lack the funds to create even a temporary shelter. I haven't eaten in three days. The authorities promised assistance, but we have yet to see any help. We desperately need support to rebuild our lives."
Another resident, Rafia, recounted the sudden landslide that struck at 3 a.m., destroying their belongings due to the heavy rain. "We managed to salvage some items, but most are damaged and scattered. We are currently staying with neighbors. There are about 10-15 houses affected here, and nearly 20-30 in total in our colony. The local MLA visited to assess the situation, but we are still waiting for government aid to secure safe housing," she said.
Rubina, another villager, shared her plight, saying, "Both of my brothers' homes have been heavily impacted. With small children, we are uncertain about where to go. Returning home is not an option; this is not a temporary issue, and it could happen again. We urge the government to provide immediate assistance to help us rebuild our lives."
One resident lamented, "Everything is ruined—doors, walls, everything has collapsed. It's unsafe to even enter the house. My two sons were outside when the landslide occurred, and now we are facing tremendous difficulties. I built this house over three years, and now it’s gone. Where will we go? We urgently need help to find a safe place to live."
In response to the crisis, Sumit Dhar, a resident of Talab Tillo in Jammu, has stepped up to assist the affected families. He organized relief efforts through social media, sharing details of his initiative with local media. "I learned about the situation through social media and obtained the administration's contact information. We coordinated with local officials to reach this area," Dhar explained. He added, "Through contributions from our Royal Palm Society, we are providing essential supplies like fruits, vegetables, and food items to 40-50 families."
