Lawyers at the Patna High Court have decided to boycott the acting Chief Justice P.B. Bajanthri in response to the lack of appropriate action regarding an alleged attack on two attorneys.
This decision was made by a coordination committee comprising various lawyer organizations, including the High Court Advocates Association, on Tuesday.
The committee stated that the protest was initiated after lawyers Anshul Aryan and his wife Manogya Singh were reportedly assaulted by staff from a private school while on their way to court.
According to the committee, Manogya faced verbal abuse and inappropriate behavior, while Anshul sustained injuries.
The incident was brought to the attention of the 'Criminal Motion' bench, which had ordered the personal appearance of the Rupaspur police station chief on September 9. Subsequently, with the acting Chief Justice's consent, the registry was instructed to register a criminal writ petition on its own initiative.
The committee further noted that during a hearing on September 10, the bench led by Acting Chief Justice Bajanthri and Justice Alok Kumar Sinha questioned the order and removed the directive for the police chief's personal appearance, leading to widespread discontent among the lawyers.
Bar representatives argued that one coordinated bench should not interfere with the orders of another bench. They accused the court of diverting attention from the real issue and attempting to undermine the case.
According to the coordination committee, during the hearing on September 17, the court scheduled the next date for two writ petitions. Following this, committee leaders announced their decision to boycott the acting Chief Justice's court starting September 18.
In a statement released by the committee, it was expressed, 'The court has shown insensitivity towards the real issue of the attack on lawyers and appears to be prolonging the matter.'
