- The story of Tulsi marriage is found in Shiva Mahapuran, according to him, there was a mighty demon named Shankhchud. His wife Tulsi was a great husband. Shankhchud became even more powerful due to Tulsi's husband and defeated the gods and took over heaven.
Then all the gods went to Lord Vishnu and told the whole thing. Vishnu told that only Mahadev can kill Shankchud. The gods went and told Mahadev their problem. Then Shiva and Shankhchud agreed to fight and fierce war started between the two.
- When Mahadev wanted to kill Shankhchud, then Akashvani took place, 'As long as the husband of Shankhachud's wife Tulsi is unbroken, its slaughter is not possible.' Then Lord Vishnu took the form of Shankhchud and went to Tulsi and dismissed his sattva.
As soon as this happened, Mahadev killed Shankhchud with his trident. Knowing the truth, Tulsi was very sad and cursed Lord Vishnu to become a stone. Vishnu said that curse said, "Goddess, you will incarnate on earth as Gandaki river and Tulsi."
- Vishnu also said that due to your curse, I will reside in the Gandaki River as Shaligram Shila. Devotees will marry Tulsi and Shaligram Shila, which will benefit them virtuous. Since then, the tradition of getting Tulsi-Shaligram marriage started, which continues till today.
