Following the violent uprooting of the Oli-led former Nepal government by Gen Z protestors, the youth turned to Discord to manage their demonstrations and communications, including picking Sushila Karki as the new leader of the country.

Earlier this week, the members of the Youth Against Corruption server on Discord used the social media-cum-chat platform to decide on Nepal’s next leader.

As of the first half of 2025, Discord had close to 260 million monthly active users.

So how did a gaming chat app used mostly by gamers become so big?

Discord combines the best features of Skype, Slack, and Teams, and crunches them into an easy-to-use interface. Given that its target demographic is gamers, the primary function of Discord as a voice-enabled chat program is that it should not slow down your games. The platform was launched in May 2015 by Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevskiy.

Discord is a downloadable application on Windows, Mac, and Linux. The lightweight version is your best bet while playing games. Apart from that, there are mobile apps for Android and Apple, and a web-based version that runs natively on your browser.
