NoE Delhi. Recently, the Government of Donald Trump has made many changes in the Immigration Law. Even making a big change in the H-1B visa policy, the application fee has been reduced to one lakh dollars. In the same direction, Britain has also made a big change in its laws. The Kir Starmer government of the UK’s Labor Party has announced that foreign workers in the United Kingdom will now have to wait double time for permanent residence. That is, to achieve the qualification of permanent residence, foreign employees will have to wait ten years instead of five years.
According to the report, British Home Minister Shabana Mahmood said on Monday that migrants will now have to pass many new tests to prove their ability to be a good citizen. He said that migrants will now have to earn the right to claim indefinite holiday in the country. With this, they will get some welfare benefits as well as a way to work in Britain and get citizenship.
What in the new rules?
According to the new rules, the applicants of permanent housing will now not only have to wait for double time but they will have to contribute to national insurance, learn high quality English and do volunteers in local charitable institutions. Referring to the reasons for the change in the rule, during the annual conference of the Labor Party in Liverpool, Mahmood said, “Because the truth is that people all over the country feel that the situation is getting out of control.”
What kind of pressure on labor government?
This recent developments are part of the Kir Starmer government’s action on illegal stay in Britain. From digital identity cards to deportation of illegal migrants, the British administration has taken several steps towards its agenda. Earlier this month, the Reform UK announced that it would eliminate the position of the indefinite migration holiday (ILR) and instead employees would have to apply for a five -year renewable visa. In fact, there is pressure on the Labor government to give such a response amidst the proposal to improve the elections of opposition leader Nigel Faraj.
What is the effect on Indian workers?
Indians have the largest group of migrants, workers and students in the UK. Therefore, this move of the UK government is likely to affect Indians. The imperative to pass a variety of tests and double the waiting period to apply for permanent residence will not only increase the financial burden on Indians, but Indians will also be trapped in the vortex of uncertainty.
According to British government data, in December 2024, 975,100 Indian citizens were registered under employment parole in Britain. This is the highest compared to any non-British citizen in the UK. Statistics have shown that between December 2023 and December 2024, the total payroll employment of British citizens declined by 241,000, while the total payroll employment of the European Union citizens declined by 80,200. The Standard UK, citing data from the Ministry of Home Affairs, stated that Britain has issued work visas to 81,463 Indian citizens in 2024.
