Adding colour and texture to your garden doesn't have to be a difficult task, and there are a range of plants that take little effort to grow. A gardening expert has revealed a list of five low-maintenance plants that can bring a vibrant touch to your outside space over the autumn and winter months. Ish, who is known to his 114,000 TikTok followers as @gardening.with.ish, also gave his tips on how to care for them throughout the year.

Firstly, Ish recommended Hebes as these evergreen shrubs can thrive in a sunny spot as well as partial sun. He explained that from late summer to the autumn, they get "amazing, purple flowers", adding: "They don't get too big, they usually get about a metre by a metre, so they're easy to contain in the ground or in a pot."

Ish said that the Sun Gold conifer is also a great option, as it is a "slower grower" and only grows about five to ten centimetres per year.

He explained: "It's more of a ground cover plant as opposed to those tall, massive trees. You can pop this right at the front of your borders, just to offer a bit of shape and texture."

Nandina is perfect for those wanting evergreen foliage with a bit of bamboo style that can be contained in pots. "Not only does this grow quite small and stay containable, it actually changes colour throughout the course of the year" Ish said.

He added: "In winter, you'll get lovely reds and pinks, in the spring it goes a bit more yellowy, autumn it goes orangy and in the summer it's lovely and green." These plants love well-drained soil and plenty of sun.

Meanwhile, a Choisia is an evergreen with a "burst of fragrance and white flowers in the spring". Ish said that it can reach sizes of about two metres by two metres and is "incredibly hardy and frost tolerant". These plants love full sun as well as partial sun, meaning they are "quite versatile".

Heucheras are also a great choice, and Ish said they are "incredibly shade tolerant as well as evergreen". He continued: "They'll have these cute little flowers you'll get in the late summer and you can get them in greens, reds, and deep purples too."

Ish's other suggestion includes the Hellebore - a low-growing, evergreen plant that offers "amazing bursts of white, red, or pink flowers in the winter". He said this is a great option if you want to add some "festive colour" to your garden in the coldest of months.
