New Delhi: After the Indian mens team avoided handshakes during the Asia Cup the BCCI has now reportedly told the womens team to do the same in their ICC Womens World Cup match against Pakistan in Colombo on Sunday according to The Indian Express.
What did BCCI decide?
According to BCCI sources the team was told not to shake hands either at the toss or after the match right before they left for Sri Lanka on Wednesday.
The team wont be shaking hands with the Pakistan team during the World Cup. The team has been informed by the BCCI bosses about this. The Indian board will stand by its players the sources said.
The Indian mens team played against Pakistan three times in the Asia Cup held in the UAE including the final which they won by five wickets. For the womens team the match against Pakistan will be their second game of the World Cup after beating Sri Lanka in their opening match in Guwahati on Tuesday.
Where will the match be played?
The Indian womens team are going to Sri Lanka to play against Pakistan because both the BCCI and PCB have agreed to face each other only at neutral locations. Interestingly this will be the fourth Sunday in a row with an India-Pakistan match happening amid tense political relations.
The Asia Cup included mentions both during and outside the matches about the Pahalgam terror attack that took 26 lives and Indias Operation Sindoor which targeted terror camps in PoK and Pakistan. This operation caused a short military standoff between the two countries.
After the final match the Indian team chose not to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) head Mohsin Naqvi who also serves as Pakistan’s interior minister and PCB chairman. Later the BCCI claimed that Naqvi walked off with the trophy.
During a virtual ACC meeting on Tuesday BCCI members said Naqvi didn’t clearly explain when the trophy and player medals would be delivered. Because of this they left the meeting halfway through.
On Wednesday Naqvi is said to have posted on social media rejecting claims that he had said sorry Let me make it absolutely clear: I have done nothing wrong and I have never apologised to the BCCI nor will I ever do so… As ACC chairman I was ready to hand over the trophy that very day and I am still ready now. If they truly want it they are welcome to come to the ACC office and collect it from me” Naqvi was quoted posting on X by Pakistan newspaper Dawn.
