Rohit Sharmas time as Indias ODI captain has come to a close with the BCCI appointing Shubman Gill as the new leader ahead of the series against Australia. Rohit considered one of Indias best captains in this format may not be part of the 2027 World Cup so it made sense to give a younger player time to settle into the role. Another reason for this change is that the selectors preferred not to have different captains for each format of the game. What did Ajit Agarkar say? Its practically impossible to have three captains across formats Agarkar explained. With the next World Cup in 2027 we felt it was the right time to have a new captain. There arent too many ODIs in the next couple of years and the new captain needs time and opportunities to build his team. Shubman Gill shared his thoughts on becoming Indias new ODI captain saying it’s a great privilege to lead the team in this format. He already leads the Test side a role he took on after Rohit Sharma stepped down. Gill also mentioned that his main aim as captain is to win the World Cup in South Africa. What was Shubman Gills statement? It is the biggest honour to lead your country in one-day cricket and to lead a side that has done well...it is immense pride for me and I hope I will be able to do great. I think we have about 20 ODIs before we play the World Cup and that is the ultimate goal. So everything that we play and all the players that we play they will try to play their best and hopefully we will be ready before we go to South Africa and win the World Cup. In the meantime Indias ODI squad welcomed back Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. However Hardik Pandya missed out because of an injury and Jasprit Bumrah was given a break for the series. Shreyas Iyer was appointed as the teams vice-captain. Who all are in Indias ODI squad? Indias ODI squad: Shubman Gill (Captain) Rohit Sharma Virat Kohli Shreyas Iyer (VC) Axar Patel KL Rahul (WK) Nitish Kumar Reddy Washington Sundar Kuldeep Yadav Harshit Rana Mohammed Siraj Arshdeep Singh Prasidh Krishna Dhruv Jurel (WK) Yashasvi Jaiswal.
