
This consultation issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has come amid reports of children's deaths due to alleged phlegm syrup in Madhya Pradesh.
What has been said in consultation
DGHS, under the Ministry of Health, said in consultation that phlegm syrup is not usually recommended for children below five years. It states that for older people, their use should be carefully based on clinical evaluation, intensive monitoring, strict adherence to appropriate doses, etc. Apart from this, the consultation issued by Dr. Sunita Sharma of DGHS states that people can also be sensitive to the compliance of doctors' prescriptions. It emphasizes the prudent recipe of phlegm syrup for children. It states that severe cough diseases in children are mostly cured automatically and often cure without medicines.
In this consultation, all healthcare centers and clinical units have been asked to ensure the purchase and distribution of properly finished products. It states, "It is necessary to be sensitive to public and private sector physicians and drug vendors to maintain these standards of care. All the state/union territories are requested from the health departments, district health authorities and clinical establishments/healthcare centers to implement and broadcast this consultation in government dispensaries, primary health centers, community health centers, district hospitals and medical institutions. '
