6 killed in torrential rains and landslides, bridge collapsed – Obnews

The disastrous heavy rains in Darjeeling district of West Bengal have caused havoc. The devastating landslides in Mirik lost their lives at least six people and the important Dudhia Iron Bridge also collapsed. This significant contact route between panoramic hill stations like Mirik and Kursong has now turned into ruins, which has broken significant road connectivity and hundreds of people are stuck as the highway tons are buried under mud and debris due to landslides.

Officials confirmed the deaths on Saturday, and the rescue teams are struggling with continuous rains to reach the affected areas. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning by issuing red alerts for extremely heavy rains in Darjeeling and nearby districts till Monday morning. In Hussain Khola on National Highway 110 near Kursiang, the main roads have been blocked due to large -scale landslides, while the views are seen immersed in the village routes and major routes mud.

This flood has created flood -like conditions in North Bengal, where Teesta and Mal Rivers are flowing above the danger mark. In Jalpaiguri’s Malbazar, the entire locality is submerged, causing the crisis in Alipurduar, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri. A powerful low pressure area over West Jharkhand, which is moving towards Bihar in the north-north-east direction, is extending this devastation, but is expected to reach the weak area by evening.

South Bengal is receiving light but continuous rains, heavy rains at different places in Murshidabad, Birbhum and Nadia. According to IMD data, Bankura topped the 24 -hour rainy chart with 65.8 mm of rain till 8:30 am on Saturday.

Expressing deep grief on social media, BJP MP of Darjeeling, Raju Bisht said, “I have suffered greatly to know about the heavy losses caused by extremely heavy rains in many parts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts. I have suffered a lot. Death has occurred, losses and damage to the basic structure. I am looking forward to the situation.”

Alert issued: Red warning for Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri today; On Sunday, red for Alipurduar and orange warning for the rest. In a forecast by Kolkata RMC, there has been a warning of red level heavy rains in Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar till noon.

As the relief work is getting faster, the officials are urging the residents to avoid traveling and stay inside the house. This outbreak of monsoon underlines sensitivity to the climate extremes of the Himalayan Terai regions of India, and the demand for strong infrastructure upgrades is increasing.
