Madhuri Dixit was a superstar of the nineties every actors dream to work with. Her smile and dance moves won millions of hearts but did you know that one of her songs was so controversial that it was banned on Doordarshan and radio? This is the story of the song Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai from the 1993 superhit film Khalnayak which created a sensation at the time. The song created a ruckus Directed by Subhash Ghai Khalnayak starred Sanjay Dutt Madhuri Dixit and Jackie Shroff in lead roles. Made at a budget of just ₹4 crore the film grossed Rs 21 crore at the box office. However the song Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai sung by Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun sparked controversy. Many criticized the songs lyrics as obscene and offensive to women. The outrage escalated to the point where the matter reached court. Complainants demanded that the Censor Board remove the song from the film and recall all sold cassettes. The court declared him innocent After a hearing the court ruled that there was nothing objectionable in the song. Despite this the controversy did not subside. Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray then defended the song stating that there was nothing wrong with it and that the protests should end. Nevertheless Doordarshan and All India Radio banned the song preventing its play on TV and radio. The remake won hearts again The song was so popular that it was remade in 2024 for the Kareena Kapoor Tabu and Kriti Sanon film Crew. This time the song served as the films background music and audiences applauded it. Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai not only made headlines at the time but also continues to resonate decades later. This song was a brilliant blend of Madhuris grace and Subhash Ghais artistry and it remains etched in peoples minds even today.
