Lucknow. The Government of Uttar Pradesh has taken an important initiative to ensure the safety, dignity and welfare of students in government primary and upper primary schools. Keeping in mind the mental and physical health of children, the Basic Education Department of the state has issued concrete and effective instructions, which will make the education system more sensitive and responsive.
1. Mandatory nature of complaint box
Now a complaint box will be installed in every school, in which children will be able to write down their problems without any fear or hesitation. This system will give students an opportunity to express their views openly.
2. Regular investigation of complaints
The headmaster will have to open the complaint box every day and investigate the complaints received and ensure necessary action thereon. This will give children confidence that they are being heard.
3. Participation of teacher-parent association
The Teacher-Parent Association (PTA) and the School Management Committee will have to remain alert to the problems of the students and ensure prompt action on any complaint.
4. Prohibition on mental and physical punishment
Any kind of mental or physical punishment of students is strictly prohibited. Schools will have to ensure that children do not become victims of any such harassment by running continuous awareness campaigns.
5. Non-discriminatory environment
There will be no discrimination on the basis of caste, religion or gender in schools. All students will get equal opportunity in basic facilities like food, sports, drinking water and toilet.
6. Counseling of victimized students
If any student is treated unfairly, he will be mentally strengthened by immediate counselling. Besides, his security and education arrangements will be ensured.
7. Menstrual Review Meetings
Teacher-Parent Association meeting will be organized every month, in which complaints will be reviewed and action will be taken impartially.
8. Strict action against the culprits
If any teacher or school employee is found guilty, disciplinary action will be taken against him and if necessary, an FIR will also be registered.
9. Warning of cancellation of recognition of the school
If a recognized school is found guilty, its recognition or no objection certificate may be cancelled. Action will be taken against the aided schools to withdraw the grant.
10. Compulsory sensitization and training of teachers
In every academic session, teachers will be given training and sensitization through the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), so that they can better understand the safety and protection of students.
