India’s Russian oil imports during April to September decreased by 8.4 percent on year impacted by narrower discounts and tighter supplies whilst refineries sought more oil from the Middle East and the U.S as cited by trade sources and shipping data as reported by Reuters. Numerous reasons are contributing to the reduction of Russian oil imports. The two key reasons are decreased discounts on Russian oil and a limited supply of Russian oil. Indian refineries are purchasing more oil from the Middle East and from the US. The findings were supported by trading sources and shipping data as noted in the report.
Who is affected by the drop in Russian oil imports?
The South Asian country is also being pressured from Washington which has raised tariffs on Indian goods to reduce Russian oil imports. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro made clear that India’s purchases of Russian crude were helping fund Moscow’s war in Ukraine.
Earlier in an interview with Bloomberg Navarro blamed India for being the reason behind the US and Europe funding Ukraine against Russia’s aggression.
“Ukraine comes to us and Europe and says give us more money (for its war). Everybody in America loses because of what India is doing. Consumers and businesses lose workers lose because Indias high tariffs cause jobs income and higher wages. The taxpayer lose because we got to fund Modis war.” Navarro told Bloomberg. He added “The road to peace runs atleast partly through New Delhi.”
When did India import 1.75 million barrels per day of Russian oil?
An Indian refinery shipped 1.75 million barrels of Russian oil per day in the first six months of this Fiscal year which started on April 1 as per the shipping data obtained from trade sources as reported by Reuters. Imports from Russia were stable at 1.6 million barrels a day in September unchanged from August but down 14.2% compared to the same month last year the report mentioned.
What is the impact of this shift on India’s total oil imports in September?
Private refineries such as Reliance Industries Limited and Nayara Energy ramped up imports in September whereas state-run refineries cut back. U.S. trade negotiators said that if India wants to take advantage of tariff reductions and other trade deals it is important to reduce crude oil imports from Russia.
From April to September India increased its crude oil imports from the US by 6.8% to an approximate average of 213000 barrels per day. Total imports for India in September were about 4.88 million barrels per day; this was down 1% from August but approximately 3.5% higher than September of last year the report mentioned.
During that same period Russias share of Indias total oil imports dropped from around 40% to around 36% while the share from the U.S. modestly increased. By September 2025 the Middle Easts share of Indias imports over six months increased from 42% to 45% and subsequently raised OPEC countries share from 45% to 49%.
