Nowadays, times have become such that people pick up their phones first as soon as they open their eyes in the morning and keep looking at the same (tech neck) till just before they close their eyes at night. Laptop in office, mobile at home and tablet in between, every task of our life is now connected to the screen. Be it studying, working or just passing time… we remain busy on mobile or laptop for everything. This habit has gradually given rise to a new problem, which doctors call “tech neck”. The name may sound a bit stylish, but this problem is quite painful and disturbing. There is a lot of pressure on the neck and shoulder areas due to bending the neck to look at the phone or laptop for hours. This pressure later becomes the cause of pain, stiffness and swelling.

If you keep staring at the screen for 8 to 10 hours every day, your neck will definitely get tired. In the beginning only slight pain or stiffness is felt, but if care is not taken then this pain spreads to the entire back and shoulders.

These problems happen

Some people even start having headache and pain in the jaws. Sometimes it feels like there is tingling or numbness in the hands. All these are symptoms of tech neck. Let us tell you that when the neck remains bent continuously, additional pressure is created on the spine. Due to this, the muscles gradually become weak and the nerves get affected. In such a situation, problems like weakness or tingling are felt in the hands. Now the question arises that how to avoid this tech neck?

protect yourself like this

  1. First things first, place the device at the right height. Most people work by keeping the phone or laptop down, due to which the neck bends forward. Try to keep your screen at your eye level. If you work on a laptop, use a stand. Give up the habit of looking at the phone by bending too low.
  2. The second important thing is to keep taking breaks every now and then. Stand up and walk around for 5 minutes every hour. This reduces muscle strain and provides relief to the neck. It is also very beneficial to do some light stretches, like slowly turning the head left and right, or moving the shoulders up and down. These small movements reduce the tension in your neck.
  3. Stay away from screens after work. If you work on laptop or phone all day, then try to take a complete break from the screen in your free time. Instead, go for a walk, talk to friends or family face to face, or do some physical activity. This will provide movement to the body and relax the muscles. It is also good for health.

do this exercise

  • Chin tuck exercise: It is very easy to do. Simply move your head slowly back, as if creating a double chin. Be careful not to tilt the head up, just pull it back slightly. Remain like this for five seconds and then come to normal position. You can do this several times a day.
  • Hand to Ear Stretch: Place the palm of your right hand on the left side of the head. Now slowly tilt the head towards the right shoulder. Hold for five seconds and then switch to the other side. This will provide relief to the muscles on both sides of the neck.
  • Cobra Pose: This is a very famous asana of yoga. Lie on your stomach and raise your head and upper chest with the help of your hands. This causes stretching of both the back and neck. This pose removes the stiffness caused by strained neck.

take care of health

In such a situation, if you also remain bent over the phone or laptop all day long, then be a little careful now. Tech neck not only causes neck pain but can also spoil your entire body balance. You can avoid this completely by sitting in correct posture, doing light exercise and taking breaks from time to time. These days the situation has become such that no work is possible without a laptop or mobile. In such a situation, it is important that you do not let it dominate you at all. Otherwise, it can become a serious problem for you in future.
