Diwali Muhurat trading 2025: The NSE and BSE hold a special trading session on every Diwali known as the Muhurat trading session which is considered an auspicious an often highly lucrative event for investors during the annual festive season. Traditionally the Diwali Muhurat trading takes place on the evening of the festival of lights but this year the session will be held in the afternoon. When will Diwali Muhurat trading 2025 take place? This year the Diwali Muhurat trading 2025 will take place on October 21 (Tuesday). The one-hour long Muhurat trading session will open at the BSE and the NSE at 1:45 pm and conclude at 2:45 pm. Additionally a pre-trading session will open between 1:30 pm to 1:45 pm during which investors can prepare for trading. Over the years the Muhurat trading session has become an annual tradition at the Indian stock market and often gives lucrative returns to investors doubling the joy of Diwali and the festive season. Why Diwali Muhurat trading 2025 was preponed? According to experts one key reason for the preponing of the special Muhurat trading session this year is due to astrological alignment of the moon. As per astrologers Kartik Amavasya will begin on October 20th at 3:44 pm and end on October 21st at 5:54 pm. Diwali is celebrated on the new moon day of the month of Kartik and therefore the timing of Muhurat trading has been altered to align with this date. Notably many market experts argue that beyond astrological reasons the Muhurat trading has shifted to afternoon with an aim to streamline trading operations on Diwali. Additionally shifting the session to afternoon has been a long-standing demand of the broking industry who have been trying persuade exchanges clearing corporations and depositories to change Muhurat trading session timings or easing post-trade compliance requirements for the special session. Shifting the Muhurat trading session to afternoon instead of evening gives enough time to traders for essential post-trade back-office activities and also allows employees of brokers clearing corporations and stock exchange staff to spend Diwali with their families and loved ones. Was Muhurat trading session held in afternoon previously? Notably the Muhurat trading was held once before in afternoon. In 2012 the Diwali special session was held between 3:45 pm and 5:00 pm due to similar astrological reasons as the timing was changed to coincide with the auspicious time that year. Brokers have often raised concerns about delays during Muhurat trading which forced their employees to stay at the office on Diwali night but holding the session in afternoon will allow increased participation by traders who observe Diwali rituals in the evening. Further the new timing will also improve market access non-resident Indians (NRIs) and global investors. Before finalizing the Muhurat trading session not only the requests of brokers but also the timing of the Shubh Muhurat were considered. This year the Shubh Muhurat was either noon or 11 pm. After discussions among the exchanges the afternoon time was decided an exchange official was quoted as saying. Asked whether the change would be made permanent he said If all market participants agree it can be considered. What happens during Muhurat trading session? The special Diwali Muhurat trading session allows investors to trade in equities derivatives currencies and SLB (Securities Lending and Borrowing). During the past 16 years the market has closed in green on 13 out of 16 times with Sensex gaining 335.06 points to close at 79724.12 and the Nifty rising 99 points to close at 24304.35 in last years special session. Thus the Diwali special session is considered a great opportunity by investors to enhance their portfolios and earn hefty dividends on their investments.
