News India Live, Digital Desk: In our homes, elders often advise that grains should always be eaten a little older, especially rice. Sometimes we find this strange, because generally we like to eat everything fresh. But do you know that there is a huge scientific and Ayurvedic secret hidden behind this advice?

Especially when it comes to white rice, eating rice that is one to two years old is considered more beneficial than eating new rice. Let us know why this is so.

Why is old grain better?

In Ayurveda, old grains have been called ‘Puraan Dhanya’ and it is considered very beneficial for health. According to Ayurveda, new grains are heavy to digest and can aggravate Kapha dosha in the body, which can lead to many health problems.

  • Easy to digest: As grain ages, it naturally dries out. In this process its moisture gets reduced, due to which it becomes lighter. Such grains do not burden our digestive system and are easily digested. It is especially beneficial for those people who have weak digestion.
  • Better absorption of nutrients: When grains are light and digestible, our body is able to absorb the nutrients present in them better. This means that you get the full benefit of that grain.
  • Also beneficial for diabetic patients: Some studies have also believed that the glycemic index of old rice may be slightly lower than that of new rice. This means it doesn’t raise blood sugar as quickly as fresh rice. However, more research is still needed on this.

How old is the grain right?

If we talk about white rice, rice that is at least one or two years old after harvesting is considered best for use. However, it is also important to keep in mind that the grains have been stored properly. It should be kept in a dry and ventilated place, so that it does not get infested by insects and does not get spoiled.

So the next time someone in your house suggests eating old grains, instead of ignoring them, remember that this is not just a tradition, but a deep knowledge to health, which has been adopted for centuries.
