India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur called her teams close four-run loss to England heartbreaking saying that even though they were in control for most of the match they couldn’t finish the job in their Women’s World Cup group clash on Sunday. At one point with Smriti Mandhana batting confidently on 88 and India needing just 56 runs from 54 balls with seven wickets left the win looked within reach. However England made a strong comeback to snatch their fourth straight victory and secure a spot in the semifinals along with Australia and South Africa. Smritis wicket was the turning point for us. It’s a heartbreaking moment Harmanpreet said at the post-match presentation. India looked comfortable while Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur were at the crease but neither could stay till the end to guide the chase. Earlier in the match Heather Knight scored 109 to help England post 288/8. In reply India fell just short ending their innings at 284/6. The turning point came when left-arm spinner Linsey Smith broke the flow by dismissing Mandhana who was playing fluently. Deepti Sharma kept India in the hunt with a steady half-century after Mandhana’s exit but Sophie Ecclestone removed her in the final overs securing the win for England. It’s a bad feeling when you have put so much hard work in but the last 5-6 overs didn’t go according to the plan” added Harmanpreet. “We still had batters but I don’t know how things went the other way. Credit to England. They didn’t lose hope they kept bowling and getting wickets.”
