The 1933 Double Eagle a gold coin was made for everyday use but later became the legendary coin in the world. It was sold for $18.9 million. It is the priciest coin ever auctioned as per Guinness World Records. How did it become from routine currency to the most costliest one? What Is a Double Eagle? Although thousands of Double Eagles were minted in 1933. But all of them were recalled by the U.S. government after the Great Depression. According to President Franklin Roosevelt’s gold recall policy gold coins were melted to stabilize the economy.  Double Eagles Design  The 1933 Double Eagle is also known for its artistry. One side depicts an American eagle flying a symbol of freedom while the reverse features Liberty striding forward representing hope and progress. Its allure comes both from beauty and from the extraordinary circumstances of its survival.​ Double Eagles Auction  Only one Double Eagle is legally privately owned and the same coin soared to a record price at Sotheby’s New York auction in June 2021. Before the auction predictions ranged from $10–15 million but the final price was much higher. For years ownership of 1933 Double Eagles had controlled the issue. The coin sold in 2021 was previously bought in 2002 by collector Stuart Weitzman for $7.6 million but it then was anonymous until revealing himself years later.​
