2013 was a remarkable year for Bollywood. Celebrating 100 years of Hindi cinema the industry was not only thriving critically but also witnessing massive box office successes. Among several eagerly awaited releases that year Dhoom 3 stood out premiering on December 20. Starring Aamir Khan Katrina Kaif and Abhishek Bachchan the movie became the first Indian film to cross the Rs 500 crore mark globally etching itself into cinematic history. What made Dhoom 3 so special? Directed by Vijay Acharya and produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner Dhoom 3 was one of Bollywood’s most expensive productions at the time with costs reported between Rs 100 crore and Rs 175 crore. According to Sacnilk the movie earned a net collection of Rs 284.27 crore in India and Rs 186 crore overseas bringing its total India gross to Rs 372 crore. Globally it shattered records with a total collection of Rs 556 crore marking a milestone no other Indian movie had achieved before. As a sequel to Dhoom (2004) and Dhoom 2 (2006) the third instalment captured audiences with its thrilling action sequences high-octane stunts and gripping storyline. The film’s combination of performance spectacle and storytelling ensured it became the year’s top-grossing movie. How did the stars shine? Abhishek Bachchan a constant presence in all three Dhoom films gained immense popularity for his action sequences and onscreen charisma. Beyond the Dhoom franchise his notable hits include Guru Bunty Aur Babli and Players. His recent venture Housefull 5 co-starring Akshay Kumar and Riteish Deshmukh released on June 6 2025 and has made a net collection of Rs 162.15 crore so far. Aamir Khan celebrated for his performances in PK 3 Idiots Dangal and Ghajini continues to balance commercial success with meaningful cinema. His upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par the sequel to the 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par is set to release on June 20 2025. Co-starring Genelia Deshmukh the movie promises to add both charm and depth continuing Khan’s legacy of impactful storytelling.
