The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) led by Mohsin Naqvi has decided not to renew the contract of womens national team head coach Mohammad Wasim after the teams disappointing performance in the ongoing ICC Womens 2025 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. According to PTI quoting a PCB source Chairman Naqvi expressed his dissatisfaction with Wasim for not meeting expectations during his time as coach.
How did Pakistan perform in the ICC Womens World Cup?
Pakistan lost all seven of their group-stage matches and were one of the first teams eliminated from semi-final contention. As of Sunday they were seventh out of eight teams on the points table and could end up last depending on Bangladeshs final match result against India.
Fatima Sanas team also faced bad luck in the tournament. Because of political tensions with host India and an agreement between the PCB BCCI and ICC their games were played in Sri Lanka during the monsoon season.
Three of Pakistans matches were affected by rain
Three of Pakistans matches were affected by rain including the October 15 game against eventual semi-finalists England where they were close to a strong win. They bowled well in other matches but lacked the finishing touch needed in such tournaments.
Why did Pakistan womens national team head coach Mohammad Wasim face criticism?
The report also notes that Wasim faced criticism mainly for Pakistans slow progress in batting which was expected to improve under a former international player with 18 Tests and 25 ODIs. There were also concerns about his communication and teamwork with other coaching staff members.
Wasim who was appointed last year also led Pakistan to a semi-final exit in the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka and had a disappointing Womens T20 World Cup in South Africa where the team won just one out of four matches. The PCB is expected to name a new coach soon with talks reportedly ongoing with possible foreign candidates.
The mens team is coached by New Zealander Mike Hesson. While he hasnt completely changed the teams fortunes some good results have helped him retain his position.
