Rohit Sharma Becomes No.1 ODI Batter For First Time; Joins Elite List of Indian Batters

The Indian stalwart Rohit Sharma has become the No.1 batter in ICC ODI Rankings following the solid 73 and 121* run knocks in the ODI series against Australia, where the visitors lost 2-1.

The knocks have taken Rohit Sharma from third spot to the top for the first time in his career,  going past Ibrahim Zadran and dethroning his fellow opener Shubman Gill. He does have 781 rating points, followed by Zadran (764) and Gill (745).

His century in the third ODI, along with a partnership with Virat Kohli, has secured a dominating 9-wicket victory at Sydney.

He went on to post 202 runs in three matches at an average of 101. His unbeaten century in the series decider at the Syndey Cricket Ground, sealed India’s victory in the final game and also reaffirmed his status as one of the most reliable and destructive openers in world cricket.

Having led India to the final in the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit joins an elite list of Indian cricketers – Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill to have the No. 01 ODI batting ranking.

Apart from Rohit Sharma, Axar Patel rewarded for a strong all-rounder performance. He took a wicket in three ODIs and added up scores 31 and 44 in the first and second games.

He jumped six places on the bowlers’s table to No.31 and up four spots to No.8 on the all-rounder table.

On the other hand, Mitchell Santner moved up three rungs to fourth place following the first two ODIs against England and Josh Hazlewood moved up two spots to eighth among the bowlers.

Other there were notable movements in the rankings. New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner rose three rungs to fourth among ODI bowlers, while Australia’s Josh Hazlewood gained two places to move to eighth.

England batter Harry Brook also made an impressive jump making a 23 places to 25th position in the ODI batting charts.

In Test rankings, South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj was the biggest mover following the side’s 8-wcket win over Pakistan in Rawalpindi. He jumped 9 places to 13th spot after claiming nine wickets in the match.

His fellowmate Simon Harmer climbed 26 spots to 45th. Among batters, Aiden Markram moved up two positions to 15th and Tony de Zorzi gained to reach a career-high 47th spot.

Kagiso Rabada also improved eight rungs to 11th among Test all-rounder, while Pakistan captain Shan Masood climbed five places to equal 42nd among batters.

Meanwhile South Africa pacer Corbin Bosch leaping 40 places to 53rd among bowlers. Pakistan’s Mohammad Nawaz rose eight spots to sixth among all-rounders, while opener Saim Ayub gained five to reach 49th in the batting list.
